Charactah Account Wiki
Ryuuko Matoi Render 01

Ryuuko Matoi, also known as Lady Ryuuko, is the main protagonist from the Kill la Kill series.

Charactah Account[]

Ryuuko Matoi, a determined transfer student at Honnouji Academy, is driven by the pursuit of truth surrounding the tragic murder of her father. This quest places her on a direct path of confrontation with the institution's Student Council President, Satsuki Kiryuuin, whom she suspects holds the key information to resolving the mystery. Her sole lead in this investigation is the substantial crimson Scissor Blade, a weapon bequeathed to her by the perpetrator of the heinous crime.

Ryuuko's character is primarily defined by her unyielding nature and valor. She exhibits a remarkable fearlessness, as evidenced by her impertinent approach towards Satsuki Kiryuuin, insisting that her inquiries be addressed promptly. Furthermore, her willingness to engage in combat with the formidable Takaharu Fukuroda, despite being outmatched, underscores her unflinching resolve. Conversely, she also displays a more vulnerable aspect to her personality when compelled to utilize Senketsu's alternative and uncovered configuration for battle, revealing a modest self-consciousness.

On occasion, Ryuuko presents a more serene and courteous demeanor, particularly when sharing meals with the Mankanshoku family. Her appreciation for the warmth and hospitality she experiences there is evident in her interactions with them, which are marked by admiration and affectionate praise for Mako's mother's culinary skills and the family's nurturing environment. This contrasts sharply with her encounters with less savory individuals, such as when she faced Mataro, whose attempt at theft she met with a cool head and constructive criticism of his tactics.

Despite her prowess in battle, Ryuuko maintains a principled stance, refraining from engaging those who are incapable of defending themselves. Throughout her journey, she often points out the obvious to her adversaries, highlighting her straightforward and no-nonsense approach to conflict.

Trivia[]

  • The moniker 'Ryuuko' is a combination of the Japanese kanji for 'flow, style, manner, method' ('ryuu') and 'child' ('ko'), potentially inferring the character's essence and youthful vitality. Additionally, it can be etymologically linked to 'ryuukou', which translates to 'fashion, trend', suggesting a thematic connection to the character's design.
  • Ryuuko's surname 'Matoi' holds the meanings of 'wear, wrap, tie, follow around, collect'. This linguistic composition could imply various connotations related to her character's development and affiliations throughout the narrative.
  • Ryuuko's distinct pupils, which resemble gears, and her single crimson streak are highly probable consequences of her integration with Life Fibers. Furthermore, these ocular characteristics might serve as an homage to Nia Teppelin from the creator's preceding work, Gurren-Lagann, who had floral-shaped pupils. This, in turn, is a reference to Nono from the anime series Diebuster, potentially signifying an underlying narrative or stylistic continuity.
  • The initial conceptual art for Ryuuko, as revealed by Shigeto Koyama, depicted her with long black hair and a physique akin to Satsuki Kiryuuin. This early design parallel is acknowledged when Satsuki dons Senketsu later in the series, maintaining a visual callback to the original concept.
  • During the production of 'Yama no Susume' episode 12, Studio Trigger incorporated a cameo of Ryuuko as a student. Although maintaining her core identity, there were subtle alterations in her appearance, such as a darker red streak in her hair and pupil design that better harmonized with the show's standard aesthetics.
  • In the 2019 anime film "Saekano the Movie: Finale," a figurine of Ryuuko dressed in a bunny girl outfit can be discerned on Tomoya Aki's figurine shelf. This crossover is noteworthy as both 'Saekano' and 'Kill La Kill' share the prestigious Aniplex as their distributor, emphasizing the collaborative ties within the industry.
